Do I have to take drivers ed or driver training to get a Kansas driver license? Kansas

New Driver Checklist

Drivers Education Training and Your KS Drivers License

If you are 18 years of age or older you do not have to take the driver education course to get your driver license.

However, the Kansas Department of Revenue (DOR) requires that all residents who are younger than 17 years old take drivers education. You must complete the drivers ed program in order to receive your Kansas drivers license.

Contact the nearest Department of Education to confirm whether a driver training course is approved by the DOR.  Dial (785) 296-8107 to telephone the Department of Education. Internet courses are not approved courses.

KS drivers education courses are taught by non-public school organizations. Community colleges and for profit driving schools also are approved to teach the program so that teens can take their license test.

The program is typically comprised of eight hours of classroom training and an additional six hours of on-the-road practice test. Some approved training vendors require you to complete 30 hours of classroom training. You must score 80 percent or higher on the classroom exam to pass the drivers education course.

Make sure that you get a certificate of completion at the end of the course. You will bring this certificate to the nearest Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office so that you can take the driving test and receive your KS driver license
