That depends on two factors: where you'll be driving and for how long.

While you do need a valid driver's license to drive anywhere in the United States, most states allow you to drive within their state for a limited amount of time with a foreign-issued driving license. Each state handles this matter differently, however. Some states may only give you 10 days, while others will give you 30 days or longer.

That's why it's important to know where you'll be driving. For instance, if you know you'll be driving in New York State, you can contact the state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) before your trip and get your answer. While this information might be listed on the DMV Web site, you likely will have to call the headquarters to find out (that number will be listed on the site).

Now, if you're going to be traveling through a number of states, you'll have a bit more work to do. But, even so, it shouldn't take you too long to get the information you need.

If you're going to be in the country for an extended period, you many need to apply for a U.S. license. But, you'll need to meet the residency and legal presence requirements for the state you're temporarily living.
