What documents are required to obtain a Maine drivers license? Maine

To apply for a ME drivers license you must provide several documents and pass both a written driver license test and a driving test.

Maine Driver License Documents

  • A completed Non-Commercial Class C Application. This can be downloaded from the BMV website. It must be signed by a parent or guardian if you're 16 or 17 years old.
  • Proof of completing a BMV-approved driver education course, if you’re younger than 18.
  • Proof of identity and age. If you’re younger than 23 you must provide your original birth certificate. Notarized copies will not be accepted.
  • Proof of legal presence.
  • Proof of Maine residency.
You'll submit these documents by mail when requesting a test date for the written and vision tests.

Prepare for the Written Driver License Test

Study the state's drivers manual. Every question on the exam is based on information addressed in the manual, with special emphasis on drinking and driving. You can obtain a hardcopy from any BMV office, or by downloading from the BMV website.

Next, take at least one practice test. These can be located online and feature similar questions to those found on the actual permit test, allowing you to accurately gauge if you're test-ready.

If you pass, you'll receive an instruction permit. You must hold the permit for six months and complete 35 hours of supervised driving, if you’re younger than 21. Otherwise, you can apply for a drivers license immediately by submitting a road test request form (supplied to you by the BMV).

What to Bring to the Driving Test

On the day of your license test, be sure to bring to the examination site:

  • Your instruction permit.
  • Your appointment notice.
  • A working vehicle that's legally registered (provide proof) and inspected.
  • Another licensed driver.
