Do I need auto insurance to apply for a MD drivers license? Maryland

New Driver Checklist

Auto Insurance and Your Maryland Driver License

You do not have to provide proof of car insurance when applying for a drivers license with the MVA. Proof, in the form of an insurance certification, is only required during vehicle registration.

MD Car Insurance Requirements

By law, you must, at the very minimum, carry the following amounts of car insurance coverage:

  • $20,000 of bodily injury coverage for one person.
  • $40,000 of bodily injury coverage for two or more people.
  • $15,000 of property damage coverage.
Coverage must be with an insurance company licensed to operate in Maryland.

If in the market for a new provider, be sure to shop around and compare insurance quotes. Each company has different insurance rates for different situations. By taking the time to compare quotes, you'll increase your chances of finding a policy that suits your budget and vehicle situation.

Maryland Car Insurance Penalties

Failing to provide proof of auto insurance could, depending on the circumstances, result in the following penalties:

  • Loss of license plates and vehicle registration.
  • Uninsured penalty fees of $150 for the first 30 days, and $7 for each additional day.
  • $25 vehicle registration restoration fee.
  • $1,000 fine and/or one year in jail for providing false insurance information.
  • Blocked from registering any future vehicles until all insurance violations are cleared.
  • Blocked from renewing a suspended registration until all insurance violations are cleared.
