While the best things in life may be free, they don’t extend to driving records. In fact, it’s difficult to find any state that will allow you to obtain your driving record for no charge.

Now, some states, such as Washington, allow you to check to see if a license is valid for free by using the state’s Web site for driver licensing. But, that’s just for a status check – it doesn’t give you access to the full driving record.

The good news, though, is that driving abstracts are relatively inexpensive. Most can be obtained for $10 or less, and some only cost a few dollars. Considering how damaging it can be to have inaccurate information contained on your record, it’s well worth the expense to periodically check your driving record.

Depending on where you live, you may have the option of obtaining your report through a third-party provider; this may cost a little more, but you often receive your abstract faster.
