Do I have to take a license test or driving test to obtain a MN drivers license? Minnesota

New Driver Checklist

License Test for MN Drivers License

Every new driver license applicant, regardless of age, must pass a license test. But before you can apply, you must meet the following requirements:

  • If 18 years old: Held your instruction permit for at least six months.
  • If 19 years old: Held your instruction permit for at least three months.
If you need a permit, you must pass two tests (vision and written) when applying.

To pass the written test you'll need to study the state's drivers manual. Every question on the test is directly based on information addressed in the manual, including use of headlights, drinking and driving, and road sign identification. You can obtain a manual from any DVS location, or by downloading from the DVS website.

You'll also want to take some practice tests. These can be found online from a long list of independent sites. A practice test will help you assess if you're prepared for the actual permit exam.

Minnesota License Test Appointment

The DVS recommends making a test appointment. You can do this online or by calling (651) 284-1234. On the day of the exam, arrive at the test site with:

  • Your drivers permit.
  • A working vehicle with proof of registration.
  • Proof of auto insurance.
If you pass, the examiner will hand you a form, confirming you passed the driving test. Take this, along with proper identification and payment for $24, to any DVS office to obtain your MN driver license.
