Do I have to take drivers ed or driver training to get a Mississippi driver license? Mississippi

New Driver Checklist

Drivers Ed in Mississippi

The MS DPS requires those under age 17 to take a drivers education class to get a drivers license permit. These teens must show proof of taking the class.

Those 17 and up are not required to take driver training for a drivers license.

Why Drivers Education is Smart

Drivers education will not be a waste of money for any new driver. The class will:

  • Help you prepare to take the written license test.
  • Teach you the right way to drive. If you learn from a friend or relative, they may have their own ways of doing things that are not standard.
  • Help you pass the driving test.
If you opt to pass on formal drivers ed, you should still at least take a practice test before you take the written driver license exam. Taking a practice test will:

  • Help you review the traffic rules.
  • Make you familiar with the exam set up.
  • Help you pass the written test.
