Do I have to take drivers ed or driver training to get a Missouri driver license? Missouri

New Driver Checklist

Driver Training for a Missouri Driver License

The DOR does not require drivers license applicants to enroll in drivers education. Only holders of an instruction permit must comply with the semblance of a drivers ed requirement by completing 40 hours of driving instruction with a parent, stepparent, guardian, or certified trainer. 10 of these hours must include nighttime driving.

After completing the 40 hours and holding your instruction permit for a minimum of six months, you'll be eligible to take a license test, provided you're 16 or older.

Of course, if you want to brush up on your knowledge beforehand, you can always take a practice test or two.

Taking the MO Driving Test

No appointment is required for a Missouri license test. When you're ready to test, visit any Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) driver examination site with:

  • Proof of name and date of birth.
  • Your MO permit.
  • A working vehicle with proof of inspection and registration.
Pass and you'll receive, depending on age, either an intermediate or full driver license.
