How do I avoid buying a lemon?
Research First
It would be nice if there were an absolute, fool-proof way to avoid buying a lemon. Unfortunately, no one can predict when a major part will fail or a car will break down. However, you can put the odds heavily in your favor by doing your due diligence first before making a used car purchase.Demand to see all service records on the used car, hire a mechanic to inspect the car, and review a vehicle history report.
Service records tell a lot about a car. Used cars that have not been regularly maintained or have suffered repeated mechanical failures are most likely to become lemons.
- Ask the seller to provide all service records for the used car. If they don’t have them, be wary.
- At the same time, have your mechanic look over the car for any major wear and tear and for failing parts.
