Driving Records and Jobs

Your driving record could cost you your job if there is something in your driving record that justifies termination. For jobs that require driving, a single citation could be used as grounds for termination, while something serious like a DUI might be grounds for dismissal for any job.

Usually, employers only review your driving record before you get hired, if at all. The exception, of course, is for jobs that require driving as part of the job. In such cases, employers may regularly review your driving record to ensure you’re not a risk on the road.

For non-driving related jobs, it is unusual for an employer to continue running driving record checks after you’ve been hired. If you incur any minor citations that are discovered by your employer upon reviewing your driving record, such offenses may cost you your job if driving is part of your job description.

Employers will usually outline what will be accepted or not accepted when you start the job, so you should know ahead of time. For other jobs, if for some reason the employer reviews your driving record after you’ve already been hired, it’s highly unlikely you’ll be fired because of a minor citation.

Review Your Record

Major offenses, like DUI and hit and run, are another matter. Employers often maintain a conduct policy that outlines criminal convictions as grounds for termination. If you think there’s something on your driving record that could jeopardize your job, it’s a good idea to check your driving record yourself. You don’t want to be caught with any surprises, so order your driving record online today.
