Insurance Stays Out of It

Neither online driving courses nor the DMV notify your insurance company when you attend traffic school. Rather, the reason you attend traffic school is to get a citation dismissed so that your insurance company doesn’t find out about it.

How Online Driving School Works

Check with your state's DMV or court system for an approved list of schools. Not all states let drivers take drivers ed to dismiss violations. In some states, the traffic school must be court-ordered.

Online driving courses, like all traffic schools, are approved by the DMV in certain states to teach driver’s education. The purpose of online driving courses, or in-person courses for that matter, is to give drivers the opportunity to get a moving violation dismissed before it becomes part of their permanent driving record.

After a driver completes an online driving course, the company administering the course is required to submit proof of completion to the DMV, although it’s highly recommend that you do it yourself.

Online driving courses never contact your insurance company. The DMV does report accidents and citations to insurance companies. But technically, a citation does not become official until 30-60 after it’s paid or upheld by a court, during which time you’re entitled in some circumstances to get it dismissed by attending traffic school.

If you do attend some type of approved traffic school, such as an online driving course, the DMV or court system may:
  • Dismiss the citation
  • Block it from appearing on your permanent driving record
  • Will not report it to your insurance company.

Double Check the Driving Record

If you’ve already completed an online driving course and would like to make sure a citation does not appear on your driving record, you can order your driving record online in a safe and convenient way.
