Do I need auto insurance to apply for a MT drivers license? Montana

New Driver Checklist

Montana Auto Insurance and Your Drivers License

You do not need to provide proof of car insurance when applying for a driver license. You do, however, have to provide proof of liability insurance during vehicle registration with the MVD.

MT Car Insurance Requirements

To comply with Montana's car insurance law, you must carry, at the very minimum, the following amounts of coverage:

  • $25,000 for the injury or death of one person in an accident.
  • $50,000 for the injury or death of two or more persons in an accident.
  • $10,000 for destruction to property in an accident.

Finding Car Insurance

If you're in the market for a carrier, take the time to compare insurance quotes. You can easily do this online. You'll find that each provider offers different insurance rates for different situations, allowing you to find an insurance package that best fits your budget and vehicle situation.

Be sure the insurance company is licensed to operate in Montana.

Auto Insurance Penalties
