Do I have to take a license test or driving test to obtain a NE drivers license? Nebraska

New Driver Checklist

Nebraska Driver License Test Requirements

According to the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), testing requirements to receive a Class O drivers license are as follows:

  • If you have had a Provisional Operator's Permit (POP), only the vision test is required.
  • If you are 18 or older and have never held a POP, you will need to complete the vision screening, written license test, and driving test.
  • If you are a new Nebraska resident with a valid drivers license from another state, you will need to complete a vision screening. The written exam and drive tests will be administered at the discretion of the DMV representative at the office you choose to visit.
  • License renewals require a vision screening, with written and driving tests issued at the discretion of the office.
  • If your current Nebraska drivers license has been expired for more than one year, you will need to complete a vision screening and a written exam.

Vision Screening

The purpose of the vision screening is simply to determine if you can see well enough to drive safely. You are allowed to wear contact lenses or glasses to complete the screening, although you will need to have them whenever you drive if they are required to pass the test.

Written License Test

The written exam to earn your Nebraska driver license is a multiple-choice question test that covers traffic sign identification and common rules of the road. Over 60 percent of first-time applicants fail the written test. The best ways to prepare for the written license test is to review the driver handbook published by the NE DMV and take practice tests. The DMV offers an interactive written exam with practice test questions and a downloadable AAA sample test.

Driving Test

The driving test measured your ability to safely perform basic driving tasks such as parking, backing, changing lanes, and signaling your intent in traffic. You will need to provide your own car with proof of registration in order to complete your driving test. You will also need to bring a licensed driver with you, as you will not be allowed to drive home if you do not pass the exam.

No appointment is needed to take the driving test, but it is recommended that you avoid visiting during commonly busy times such as right before or after a holiday, when school is not in session, or after 3 p.m. on a work day.
