How do I apply for a NH drivers license if I am younger than 18? New Hampshire

New Driver Checklist

New Hampshire Drivers License for Teens

Any teen 15 years and six months old can begin driving in NH. You can apply for a drivers license after turning 16 and completing a drivers education course. To fulfill this requirement, the course must be approved by the DMV. Any driver training completion certificate from a school not sanctioned by the state will be rejected.

To apply, visit any DMV office with:

  • A completed Parent or Guardian Authorization Certificate .
  • A completed Application for Drivers License (Form DSMV 450).
  • A drivers ed completion certificate.
  • Proof of identification.
  • Proof of NH residency.
  • Cash or a check, money order, or credit card to pay the driver license application fee.
When applying, you'll also be required to pass a vision test and a written test. You'll have 30 minutes to pass the 20-question written test, which is based on information addressed in the state's drivers manual. You must answer at least 16 questions correctly to pass the exam.

To prepare for the test, study New Hampshire's drivers manual. You can obtain a hardcopy from any DMV office, or by downloading from the DMV website. After studying the entire manual, you'll next want to take at least one permit practice test. These can found online and feature questions similar to those on the actual permit exam, allowing you to assess if you're test-prepared.

Pass and you'll receive a youth operator license (New Hampshire's version of a drivers permit). While holding this license, or learners permit, you'll need to accrue at least 40 hours of driving under the supervision of a licensed adult who is 25 or older. You must document these hours on a Driver's Out-of-Class Log Sheet (this can be downloaded from the DMV website), with 10 hours taking place at night.

Take the Driving Test

You must arrive at the license test site no later than 3:30 p.m. Bring with you:

  • Two forms of identification.
  • A working vehicle that's legally registered and inspected.
  • Another licensed driver.
If you pass you'll be issued a youth operator license. You'll be come eligible for an unrestricted drivers license when you turn 18.
