New Hampshire Driver License Documents

When you arrive at a NH DMV office to apply for your drivers license, you'll need:

  • An original or certified birth certificate, valid U.S. passport or military ID and one of the following: Social Security card, divorce decree, school photo ID, military identification card, military discharge papers, marriage certificate, or passport.
  • Current out-of-state driver license or one that has not been expired more than 12 months (for new residents).
  • Proof of residency using one of the following: utility bill with postmarked date; a valid New Hampshire registration; or a town/city clerk Approval of Residency letter.
In addition, you'll need to pass three tests: vision, written, and driving.

NOTE: No proof of drivers education is required unless you're younger than 18.

New Hampshire Written Test

The written test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions and you must answer at least 16 correctly to pass. All questions are directly based on information found in the state's drivers manual, making it your prime study source. You can grab a copy from any DMV office, or by downloading from the DMV website.

After studying the manual in its entirety, take at least one online practice test. These tests abound online and feature questions similar to those on the actual exam. Take as many practice tests as needed until you feel test-ready.

New Hampshire Driving Test

You don’t need an appointment; just arrive to the license test site no later than 3:30 p.m. Have with you:

  • Two forms of identification.
  • A working vehicle that's legally registered and inspected.
  • Another licensed driver.
If you pass, you'll be issued a 60-day temporary drivers license. Your permanent driver license should arrive in that time.
