Do I need auto insurance to apply for a NH drivers license? New Hampshire

New Driver Checklist

NH Auto Insurance and Your Drivers License

New Hampshire does not require mandatory car insurance. So you do not have to provide proof of insurance when applying for a NH driver license.

The DMV, however, highly recommends carrying auto insurance. If you're held responsible for a car accident and cannot pay the subsequent medical and/or property damage costs, your license may be suspended under the state's financial responsibility law. The DMV may then require you to carry auto insurance for a set number of years. You would then have to file for an SR-22 certificate with a New Hampshire-licensed insurance company.

Under this mandate you would have to carry, at the very least, the following minimum amounts of liability coverage:

  • $25,000 due to injury or death to one person.
  • $50,000 due to injury or death to more than one person.
  • $25,000 due to property damage of others.

If you're in the immediate market for auto insurance be sure to take the time to compare insurance quotes from a variety of providers. Each carrier has different insurance rates for different situations. So the more you shop around the better your chances of finding coverage that best meets your budget and vehicle situation.
