Do I have to take a license test or driving test to obtain a NH drivers license? New Hampshire

New Driver Checklist

License Test Requirements for a NH Drivers License

During the course of the New Hampshire driver license application process you'll be required to pass three tests: vision, written, and driving.

Vision Test

To pass, you must read the test's 20/40 vision line with both eyes. If blind in one line, you must read the 20/30 vision line. If glasses or contacts are needed to read the lines, you'll be required to wear them while driving.

If you fail the vision test, no other driver license tests will be administered.

Written Test

You'll have 30 minutes to take the 20-question test. You must answer a minimum of 16 questions correctly to pass. Study the state's drivers manual to prepare. All questions are based on information contained in the manual, including driving emergencies, parking, and space management. You can snare a manual from any DMV office, or by downloading from the DMV website.

After studying the manual you'll next want to take some practice tests. These can be found online and feature questions similar to those on the actual exam. Ace a practice test and you should be able to do the same on the actual permit exam.

Driving Test

You don’t need an appointment; just arrive at the license test site no later than 3:30 p.m. Have with you:

  • Two forms of identification.
  • A working vehicle that's legally registered and inspected.
  • Another licensed driver.
If you pass you'll receive a temporary 60-day drivers license. Your permanent drivers license will be mailed to you.
