How to Update an Expired New Mexico Drivers License

The New Mexico Motor Vehicles Division (MVD) will send you a drivers license renewal form in the mail 30 to 60 days before your current license expires. Should you misplace your renewal form and your drivers license expires, you can still update your license.

Visit the nearest New Mexico (NM) MVD office to update your expired license. You are required to bring a copy of your expired driver license with you to the MVD office.

You are not required to take the written portion of the NM license test unless your license is expired for one year or longer. If your driver license is expired longer than five years, you must take and pass the driving test to complete the reinstate license process.

NM drivers who are 75 years of age or older are required to renew their drivers license each year. They only have to pay the license renewal fee every four years.

Begin the reinstate license process as soon as possible. Driving without a valid NM driver license could cause you to receive a traffic ticket.
