Do I have to take a license test or driving test to obtain a NC drivers license? North Carolina

New Driver Checklist

Test Requirements for a NC Drivers License

To acquire a North Carolina driver license you must pass four tests: vision, written, road signs, and driving.

Vision Test

Fail this test and all other testing is placed on hold. If corrective lenses are required to pass the vision test you will be required to wear the lenses when driving at all times. If caught driving without required corrective lenses, you'll face the same fine as driving without a valid drivers license.

Road Signs and Written License Test

Study the state's drivers manual in its entirety to prepare for both tests. All questions are based directly on information found in the manual, including lane markings, handling emergency driving situations and road sign identification. You can grab a manual from any DMV office, or by downloading from the DMV website.

Next, take some practice tests. These can be found online from a variety of independent sites. A practice test features similar questions to those found on the actual exams, providing good insight on what to expect come test day.

Driving Test

A test appointment is not required, although some DMV test locations do offer this option. When you arrive for the driving test, be sure to have:

  • Your license or permit.
  • A working vehicle with proof of car insurance.
  • A licensed guardian or parent, if applicable.
