NC Driver License Fees

To obtain a North Carolina drivers license you must, at one time or another, pay one or all of the following license fees:

  • Learners permit: $15
  • Limited provisional license: $15
  • Drivers license: $4 per license year

Obtain a North Carolina Drivers License

Visit any DMV office with:

  • Proof of age and identity.
  • Proof of car insurance.
  • Proof of North Carolina residency.
  • Proof of your Social Security number.
  • Cash or a check or credit card for the driver license fee payment.
While applying you'll need to pass vision, knowledge and traffic sign tests. To prepare for the knowledge and traffic sign tests, study the state's drivers manual and take several practice permit tests.

Take the Driving License Test

No appointment is needed for a driving test, although some DMV test site locations do offer this option. When you arrive for the test, have with you:

  • A working vehicle with proof of insurance.
  • Your permit or license.
  • A licensed parent or guardian, if applicable.
