License Renewal for an Expired License

You do not have to take additional tests – written and driving – to renew your NC drivers license if it has been expired fewer than 12 months.

This does not mean, however, that you can drive with an expired driver license. If caught, you'll receive a traffic ticket and fines.

How to Reinstate License Expired Fewer Than 12 Months

To renew your drivers license, visit your local DMV office with:

  • Either your expired drivers license, or two forms of identification.
  • Proof of your Social Security number (the DMV might not have it on file).
  • Payment for the driver license renewal fee ($4 per license year).
You will also be required to pass a vision screening and a traffic sign recognition test.

How to Reinstate License Expired More Than 12 Months

Visit any DMV office with:

  • Either your expired drivers license, or two forms of identification.
  • Proof of your Social Security number (the DMV might not have it on file).
  • Payment for the driver license renewal fee ($4 per license year).
You will also be required to pass three tests: vision, traffic signs, and written.

To prepare for the traffic signs and written tests, study the state's drivers manual and take at least one online practice test. If you pass all three exams, you'll then need to pass a license test. No appointment is needed, but some DMV test sites do offer this option. Pass the license test and you'll receive a new North Carolina driver license
