Driving Test Appointment

A license test appointment is not required. Although the option for making an appointment does exist with some DMV license test locations, most tests are given on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Before taking the NC driving test, try to get as much driving experience as possible. Practice driving in all situations. This includes driving in heavy urban corridors, turning at light-controlled intersections, and parallel parking on busy streets.

You should also consider taking a practice test to refresh yourself on specific road rules. These tests abound online, allowing you to take as many as needed.

When you arrive for your driver license test, be sure to have with you:

  • Your permit or drivers license.
  • A working car with proof of valid car insurance. The insurance must be with a North Carolina provider licensed to operate in the state.
  • A licensed parent or guardian, if applicable.
If you pass, you'll receive a driver license. Depending on your age, it will either be valid for five or eight years.
