What documents are required to obtain a North Dakota drivers license? North Dakota

Documents Required to get a North Dakota Drivers License

To receive a North Dakota (ND) drivers license you must provide several documents, including proof of liability auto insurance, to the Department of Transportation (DOT). If you are a teen who is younger than 18 years of age, bring your parents or legal guardians with you to the nearest DOT Drivers License and Testing service center.

Submitting Official Driver License Documents

Your parents or legal guardians have to sign your driver license application to show that they consent to you driving in ND. You must also give the DOT a certificate that shows that you completed a general drivers education course. Approved drivers ed vendors are listed at the ND DOT website.

Additional documents that you, whether you are a teen or an adult, are required to provide to the DOT must prove your citizenship, residency and identity. Acceptable documents that prove your citizenship are your:

  • Social Security card
  • Birth certificate
  • Certificate of citizenship or naturalization (forms N560 and N550)
Documents that the ND DOT accepts to prove your identity include your:

  • Marriage or divorce decree
  • United States passport
  • Military photo identification card
To prove that you are a ND resident, you can present the DOT with:

  • A paycheck stub
  • Recent utility bill
  • Mortgage or rental lease agreement papers
  • Income tax return form
Faxed and photocopied documents are not accepted. Only original or certified documents are accepted. These documents are required before you take the written license test or vision test. Prior to taking the driving test, you must present the DOT with proof of liability auto insurance.

Relocating and Taking Required Driver License Tests

If you relocate to ND, within 60 days of moving to the state, visit a DOT Drivers License and Testing center and surrender your out-of-state driver license for a ND drivers license. You do not need an appointment to take the written test. However, an appointment is required to take the driving test.

To prepare to pass both tests, study the ND driver’s manual (it’s available at the DOT service center and for download off the DOT website). Take a practice test with a friend or relative based on the information in the manual.
