Do I need auto insurance to apply for a ND drivers license? North Dakota
Auto Insurance and the North Dakota Drivers License
All North Dakota (ND) drivers are required to have liability auto insurance on each motor vehicle that they own. Failure to maintain liability car insurance could result in the driver receiving a traffic ticket or a fine. ND residents can also have their drivers license suspended.Residents who operate a motor vehicle without liability auto insurance must purchase a duplicate driver license from the Department of Transportation (DOT). Cost to purchase the duplicate driver license is $50. Additionally, over the next three years the driver must provide proof to the DOT that they have liability auto insurance.
Provide proof of car insurance to the DOT’s Drivers License and Testing center before you take your driving test. Data that must be included with the proof is:
- Name of the insurance company.
- Policy number.
- Effective date of the insurance policy.
- Date that the insurance policy expires.
