About North Dakota Driver License Appointments

You are not required to make an appointment to take the written portion of the North Dakota (ND) license test. It is the first test that you will take when you apply to receive your driver license.

Written examinations are administered from the time that the ND Department of Transportation (DOT) service center opens until one hour before noon. ND DOT service centers close for lunch from noon until 1 p.m. (Bismarck, Grand Forks, Minot, and Fargo DOT service centers do not close for lunch.)

After the service center reopens at 1 p.m. you can take the written test at any time up to one hour before the service center closes.

The DOT does require you to make an appointment to take the driving test so that you can receive your drivers license. A DOT professional will accompany you in your motor vehicle during the driving or road test.

DOT service center locations and telephone numbers are listed at the DOT website. They are also included in the ND driver’s manual. Call the service center to make an appointment to take your driving test. Arrive to the service center several minutes early on the day of your driving test.

Study the ND driver’s manual (the manual is available at DOT service centers). Also take a practice test based on information in the manual with a friend or relative. This will increase your chances of passing both examinations.
