How do I apply for a drivers license if I am relocating to Ohio? Ohio
After relocating, some states allow you to transfer a drivers license from another state after merely passing a vision test, but to get an OH drivers license Ohio requires you to pass a written exam, too.
That means you should study the OH driver license handbook (also known as the Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws). It's often a good idea to take a practice test afterwards just to be sure you're prepared for the license test.
You won't need an appointment for your visit to the State Highway Patrol Examination Station. But, you must bring proof of the following:
License fees vary, but if you're 21 or older, the cost for a new license is $23.
Be aware that sometimes a new resident must also take a driving test; this is usually reserved for those younger than 18 (see below) or those with driving restrictions.
You can do this by mailing or faxing your high school or commercial driver education certificate (originals only) to:
Ohio Department of Public Safety
Governor's Highway Safety Office
Driver Training Manager
1970 West Broad St.
P.O. Box 182081
Columbus, OH 432218-2081
Fax: (614) 995-4778
If the state deems the training and driving experience you received are sufficient, you'll receive a letter stating what tests you need to take to get your Ohio driver license.
If your training doesn't meet Ohio's standards, you may receive partial credit.
Because this matter can be complex and varies with the individual it's best to let the BMV advise you on what to do in your situation.
Contact the BMV at (614) 752-7600 for more information regarding this or other relocation/moving issues, or stop by a driver exam station.
