Auto Insurance Requirements for a RI Drivers License

The Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires all drivers in the state to have liability auto insurance. Failure to maintain adequate car insurance could result in a traffic ticket or a $500 fine.

Each time that you operate a motor vehicle in Rhode Island you must carry your valid RI drivers license and auto insurance card. Data that the insurance card must provide includes:

  • Your first and last name.
  • Year, make, and model of the motor vehicle.
  • Insurance carrier name.
  • Policy number.
  • Policy state and expiration dates.
The DMV will not allow you to take the driving test to receive your driver license until you present proof of auto insurance.
