Do I have to take a license test or driving test to obtain a RI drivers license? Rhode Island

New Driver Checklist

Rhode Island Drivers License Test Requirements

The Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) mandates that all residents pass a written examination and a driving test before they are issued a drivers license. Information covered on both tests is included in the Rhode Island (RI) driver’s manual.

Download a copy of the RI driver’s manual at the DMV website. The manual is listed at the bottom of the website under “New License / Permits.”

It takes about 20-30 minutes to complete the written portion of the license test. You have as long as 90 minutes to finish the written examination. No appointment is necessary to take the written test.

You do need to make an appointment to take the driving test. Call the DMV at (401) 462-5808 to schedule your road or driving test. Provide the DMV professional who accompanies you on the road test with proof of auto insurance.

Areas covered on the driving test are included in the driver’s manual. Sample items that you might be tested on include:

  • Steering.
  • Parking and braking.
  • Passing other motor vehicles.
  • Understanding traffic signs and signals.
Take at least one practice test based on material in the driver’s manual to increase your chances of passing the written and driving tests. The more practice tests you take, the more you will increase your chances of passing the tests.

New residents who relocate to RI with a valid out-of-state driver license are not required to take the written or driving tests.
