Do I have to take drivers ed or driver training to get a Rhode Island driver license? Rhode Island

New Driver Checklist

Required Rhode Island Drivers Education

Rhode Island’s Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) mandates that teens younger than 18 years old take a 33-hour drivers education course before they receive their drivers license. The Rhode Island (RI) drivers ed course is offered through the Community College of Rhode Island.

Before teens enroll in another driver training course they should check with the Community College to ensure that the course is an approved DMV training program. A signed drivers ed certificate of completion must be presented to the RI DMV before teens receive their driver license.

Additional driver training RI teens must have includes:

  • 50 hours of driving practice with a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old (driver should have his license for five years or longer).
  • 10 hours of the 50-hour driver training has to take place during night.
The training is required before teens take their final license test (the road or driving test). Information on both tests is located in the RI driver’s manual. A copy of the manual can be downloaded at the DMV website.

Teens are encouraged to take a practice test based on the information in the manual. This will help them to pass the required license tests, especially the written test.
