How do I update my Rhode Island driver license if I currently have an expired license? Rhode Island
Updating an Expired Rhode Island Drivers License
Visit a Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) branch office to renew your expired license.A driver license that is expired longer than three years cannot be renewed. In this case, you will have to apply to receive a new Rhode Island (RI) drivers license (see below for details).
However, if the expiration date on your driver license is fewer than three years ago, bring the license and a completed license renewal form with you to the RI DMV branch office. You can also complete the reinstate license process without a renewal form. Just make sure that you bring your expired drivers license with you to the DMV branch office.
Pay the $31.50 driver license renewal fee. RI residents that are aged 75 years or older will pay $9.50 license renewal fee as their driver license is only good for two years.
DMV will give you a temporary license before you leave the branch office. Your permanent RI driver license will arrive in the mail to your home address within 60 days.
Drivers License Expired for Three Years or Longer
Licenses that are expired for three years or longer require you to take a vision and written examination. You must also take the road license test before DMV will issue you a new RI driver license.
Contact the DMV to renew your license as soon as possible. Driving with an expired RI license could cause you to receive a traffic ticket.
