How do I apply for a SC drivers license if I am 18 or older? South Carolina

New Driver Checklist
If you are 18 or older, you are not bound by the rules of the South Carolina Graduated Driver License (GDL) system for teen drivers. This means there are far fewer requirements for earning your first drivers license.

Earning Your Drivers License

You may apply for a beginners permit to practice driving by completing a vision screening and written license test at the nearest SC Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office. A permit allows you to practice driving when accompanied by a licensed driver. A study guide for the written license test, as well as a number of practice test questions, can be found in the state's driver handbook.

After you have held a driving permit for at least 180 days, you may apply for a regular drivers license by completing the vision screening and driving test. At this time, you will also need to provide proof of a valid auto insurance policy if you own your own vehicle.

While proof of completion of a drivers ed or driver training program is not necessary for adult drivers, you may want to consider completing drivers education to enhance your own skills or to obtain a possible discount on your car insurance rates.

Driver License Documentation Requirements

When applying for a permit or your first driver license, South Carolina requires you to provide proof of:

  • Your name, birth date, and citizenship.
  • Your Social Security number.
  • Your SC Residency.
If your legal name has changed since birth, you will need to provide a court order, marriage certificate, divorce decree, or adoption papers to support this change. If your identification documents are not in English, you will need to have a qualified translator provide copies.
