Do I have to take a license test or driving test to obtain a SC drivers license? South Carolina

New Driver Checklist

SC Driver License Testing Requirements

Testing requirements for South Carolina drivers vary. See below for more details about each test, but first note that:

  • To obtain a permit, you'll need to complete a vision screening and written license test.
  • To obtain your first drivers license, you'll need to complete a vision screening and driving test.
  • To exchange an out-of-state license for a South Carolina drivers license, you'll need to complete a vision screening.
  • To get a South Carolina driver license if you are a new resident with an expired license from your home state, you'll need to complete the vision screening, written license test, and driving test.
  • To renew a driver license, you will need to complete a vision screening. A written license test is only required if you have five or more points on your driving record in the last two years.
  • If your license has been expired for more than nine months, you'll need to complete the vision screening, written license test, and driving test.

Vision Screening

The vision screening is simply a short exam to determine if you can see well enough to drive safely. In most cases, you can provide an eye examination certificate obtained within the last 12 months from a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist if you do not wish to complete this test.

Written License Test

The written license test, also known as the knowledge test, is a multiple-choice test to see if you understand basic traffic signs and common safety precautions.

You can prepare for this test by reviewing the practice test questions in the driver handbook published by the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). You can also find practice tests from various independent drivers ed companies for free or low fees.

Driving Test

The driving test, also known as the road skills test, measures your ability to safely handle a motor vehicle under normal traffic conditions. You will be asked to perform tasks such as parking, backing, turning, and changing lanes; you will not be asked to do anything dangerous or illegal during the test.

No appointment is needed for a road test, but please keep in mind that SC DMV offices do not provide driving tests when weather conditions are poor. Rainy or icy conditions can be hazardous, especially for new or inexperienced drivers.
