Do I need to make an appointment to apply for a SC driver license? South Carolina
Planning Your SC DMV Visit
You don’t need an appointment to apply for a South Carolina drivers license. Offices are open from Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Selected locations also have limited Saturday hours. If you wish to avoid a long wait, however, it is best to not visit during the following peak traffic times:- Before or after a major holiday.
- After 3 p.m. on a workday.
- On days when school is not in session.
Additional Tips for Quicker Driver License Service
You can ensure that your trip to the SC Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) runs smoothly by keeping in mind a few basic tips.
- Bring documents to prove your name, date of birth, citizenship, Social Security number, and state residency.
- Have payment ready (cash or a check, credit card, or debit card) for all appropriate fees.
- If you need to a motorcycle endorsement or a CDL, please keep in mind that not all DMV offices will provide these services.
- If you need to take the written license test, complete a few practice test questions first to make sure you're prepared. Even though it's a multiple-choice test, many people do fail the exam on the first try.
- Remember that driving tests will not be given when weather conditions are poor.
- Consider checking to see if the service you need is available online. For example, you may be able to renew your drivers license for five years simply by answering a few questions on the DMV website.
