New Driver Checklist

Obtaining a South Dakota Drivers License (Younger than 18)

In the state of South Dakota, teen drivers younger than 18 must hold a learners permit for a minimum of 90 days prior to applying for a drivers license. In order to obtain a drivers permit, you must:

  • Be at least 14 years of age.
  • Provide proof of identity, your Social Security number, and SD residency.
  • Pass a vision test.
  • Pass a written permit test.
In preparation for the permit test, become familiar with the South Dakota Drivers Manual, available for download on the Department of Public Safety (DPS) website. You can also take a free permit practice test online, offered by numerous independent drivers ed websites.

Drivers Education Requirements

The completion of a drivers ed program is not mandatory in South Dakota, but teens who choose not to take a driver training course must hold a learners permit for 180 days, prior to applying for a drivers license. Contact the DPS directly, if you are interested in taking a drivers education course:

  7. Pass the driving test.
Tests are given on a walk-in basis only. If you fail the test the first time, you can repeat it on the next business day.

Obtaining the SD Restricted Minor’s License

Passing the driving test is the final step in obtaining your restricted minor’s license, valid for five years, or until you turn 18.

While driving with a restricted license, you cannot operate a motor vehicle between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. without the accompaniment of a parent or legal guardian. Restrictions are only applicable until your 18th birthday.
