How do I apply for a drivers license if I am relocating to South Dakota? South Dakota

New Driver Checklist

SD Relocation: Driver License Transfer Procedures

If you are a new resident to the state of South Dakota, you are required to replace your valid, out-of-state license with a SD drivers license within 90 days of moving. The only exception is for students, military personnel, or military dependents, relocating on a temporary basis only for school or work purposes.

In order to apply for a South Dakota license, you must present the following in person, to a Driver Exam station:

  • Valid, out-of-state drivers license.
  • Proof of your Social Security number.
  • Two documents proving your SD residency, to include your physical SD address.
  • Completed driver license application form, to include the signature of a parent or legal guardian if you’re younger than 18.
  • $20 application fee.
  • Proof of vehicle insurance and registration.
A complete list of acceptable documents is available on the Department of Public Safety (DPS) website, in addition to a list of testing locations. You can also contact the DPS directly at the following address:

South Dakota DPS

118 W. Capitol Ave.
Pierre, SD 57501

Required Driver License Tests

All applicants for a South Dakota license must pass a vision test and a written license test.

In addition to the South Dakota Drivers Manual, available for download on the DPS website, you can prepare for the real test by taking a practice test. A number of independent websites provide these practice exams online for free or low fees.

You will not be required to take driving test, provided your out-of-state license is not expired. If your license is revoked or suspended, you are ineligible to apply a South Dakota drivers license.
