SD Relocation: Driver License Transfer Procedures
If you are a new resident to the state of South Dakota, you are required to replace your valid, out-of-state license with a SD drivers license within 90 days of moving. The only exception is for students, military personnel, or military dependents, relocating on a temporary basis only for school or work purposes.In order to apply for a South Dakota license, you must present the following in person, to a Driver Exam station:
- Valid, out-of-state drivers license.
- Proof of your Social Security number.
- Two documents proving your SD residency, to include your physical SD address.
- Completed driver license application form, to include the signature of a parent or legal guardian if you’re younger than 18.
- $20 application fee.
- Proof of vehicle insurance and registration.

Required Driver License Tests
All applicants for a South Dakota license must pass a vision test and a written license test.In addition to the South Dakota Drivers Manual, available for download on the DPS website, you can prepare for the real test by taking a practice test. A number of independent websites provide these practice exams online for free or low fees.
You will not be required to take driving test, provided your out-of-state license is not expired. If your license is revoked or suspended, you are ineligible to apply a South Dakota drivers license.
