Do I have to take drivers ed or driver training to get a South Dakota driver license? South Dakota

New Driver Checklist

SD Driver Training Requirements

The state of South Dakota does not require first-time drivers to complete a drivers education course, but teen drivers younger than 18 must meet one of the following requirements prior to applying for the drivers license:

  • Hold a learners permit for at least 180 days.
  • Complete an approved drivers ed course, and hold a learners permit for at least 90 days.
Teen drivers who chose to complete a driver training course, therefore, can obtain a drivers license in the half the time as those who do not. Contact the Department of Public Safety (DPS) directly for a list of approved courses in your area:

Required Driver License Tests

Regardless of your decision pertaining to drivers education, you must pass a vision test, a written license test, and a driving test, in order to obtain a South Dakota drivers license.

In addition to the South Dakota Drivers Manual, available for download on the DPS website, you can prepare for the tests by taking a free or low-cost practice test available from a multitude of drivers education websites.
