SD Expired Driver License Renewal Procedures

In the state of South Dakota, you can renew your drivers license up to 180 days prior to the expiration date. If you have allowed your license to expire, you can renew within 30 days of the expiration date without having to repeat the written license test or driving road skills test.

License Renewal in Person

South Dakota offers two license renewal options: in person and by mail. However, if your license is expired, you can only renew in person.

You can renew in person at your local Driver Exam Station by presenting your expired license, proof of vehicle insurance, and the $20 renewal fee to the testing administrator. All applicants must pass a vision test, but you will not be required to pass a license test or driving test unless your license has been expired for 30 or more days.

Reinstate License

If your license has been revoked or suspended, you must pay a reinstatement fee of up to $200, in addition to the $20 application fee.

In the case of license revocation, you must pass the vision test, the written license test, and driving road skills test. In the case of suspension, you must pass the vision test only.

Penalties for Driving with an Expired License

Driving with an expired license could result in a traffic ticket, vehicle impoundment, or license suspension. Contact the DPS Driver Licensing Program if you are unsure of your license expiration date.
