SD Driver License Appointments

New drivers in the state of South Dakota must pass a vision test, a written license test, and a driving test, in order to obtain a SD drivers license. Tests are given on a walk-in basis only; no appointment is necessary.

Peak Driver License Testing Times

The busiest times at most locations are Tuesday and Friday afternoons, in addition to days before and after a holiday weekend. Driving tests are not given between the hours of 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., or within one hour of the regular closing time.

If you would like to complete your driving test on the same say as your written license test, you should arrive within two hours of closing time.

Locating a SD Driver Exam Station

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety (DPS) website provides a complete list of Driver Exam stations. You can also contact DPS headquarters directly, at the following address:

South Dakota DPS
Driver Licensing Program
118 W. Capitol Ave.
Pierre, SD 57501
(800) 952-3696

Driver License Test Preparation

In preparation for the license and driving tests, become familiar with the South Dakota Drivers Manual, available for download on the DPS website. You can also take a practice test online through a number of independent drivers education companies.

Required Driver License Documents and Fees

Prior to taking the driving test, you must submit proof of identity, Social Security number, street address, and vehicle insurance. A list of acceptable documents is available on the DPS website. The fee for a South Dakota license is $20.
