How do I apply for a TN drivers license if I am 18 or older? Tennessee

New Driver Checklist

Apply for a Tennessee Driver License (18 and Older)

You can receive an unrestricted drivers license in Tennessee (TN) on your 18th birthday. Visit a Department of Safety (DOS) driver licensing station to apply for your driver license.

Most large driver licensing stations are open Monday through Friday. Some smaller stations are closed on Friday. Dial (866) 849-3548 to ask about office locations and hours of operation.

Before the TN DOS will issue you a driver license you must:

  1. Provide original documentation that proves your identity, residency, and citizenship.
  2. Submit proof of adequate liability auto insurance on your motor vehicle.
  3. Pass a written license test.
  4. Complete a vision screening at the licensing station.
  5. Pass a road or driving test.
Your parents or legal guardians are not required to accompany you to the licensing station. Documents that you can use to prove your citizenship and identity include your:

  • Birth certificate
  • Valid United States passport
  • Official naturalization or citizenship certificates (i.e. N550, N560)
  • School photo identification card
  • Social Security card
Documents that you can use to prove your identity include a:

  • Recent utility bill
  • Bank statement
  • Pay stub
  • Most recent state income tax return form
  • TN voter registration card
All documents must be original. Copies are not accepted. Documents that you use to prove your residency are required to have your name and street mailing address on them.

Taking Tennessee Driver License Tests

Pick up a copy of the current TN driver’s manual at the licensing station. You can also download a copy of the driver’s manual off the DOS website. The manual is listed at the bottom of the page under “Forms and Publications.”

Read the 25-page driver’s manual from start to finish. Partner with a friend or relative to take a practice test based on the material in the manual. Areas covered on the written and driving tests are included in the driver’s manual.

Practice driving on highways and city streets. For example, you can practice steering, braking, passing other motor vehicles, and parking. These areas will likely be covered on the license test.

You do not need an appointment to take the vision exam or written license test. These tests are taken prior to the driving test.

Contact a driver licensing station to schedule your driving test. Bring proof of liability auto insurance with you to the station.

After you pass the driving test, pay the licensing fee and have your photo taken. A TN drivers license is good for five years.
