Tennessee Driver License Testing Requirements

Tennessee’s Department of Safety (DOS) mandates that all teen drivers in the state take and pass a driving test before they receive their drivers license. Additionally, teens between the ages of 15 and 17 must receive a learners permit before TN will issue them a driver license.

Before you take your driving test, visit a Tennessee (TN) driver licensing station. Dial (866) 849-3548 to find a station near you. Most stations are open Monday through Friday.

Drivers Relocating to Tennessee

Drivers who relocate to TN with a valid out-of-state drivers license are not required to take a driving test to receive their TN drivers license. They are only required to take and pass a vision screening.

Should an out-of-state drivers license be expired for six months or longer, the driver must take the vision, written, and driving portions of the TN license test.

Studying for the Tennessee Driving Test

Information covered on the TN driving test is included in the TN driver’s manual. You can download a copy of the manual at the DOS website.

Study the manual thoroughly. Take a practice test based on the material in the manual. You can also take a practice test at the DOS website. The more practice tests you take, the greater you increase your chances of passing the license tests.

Also practice driving on highways and city streets. Practice steering, parking, braking, and passing other motor vehicles. These skills are covered on the driving test.

Taking the Driver License Tests

Pass the written examination then contact a driver licensing station to make an appointment to take your test. You can do this online at the DOS website or you can visit a station in person to schedule your driving test.

Bring proof of liability auto insurance with you on the day that you take the driving test. If you are younger than 18 years old, also bring your parents and legal guardians to the licensing station.
