How do I apply for a UT drivers license if I am younger than 18? Utah

New Driver Checklist
This is the basic structure you'll need to follow; the order of some of the steps may be a bit different, depending on how you go about the process, but one way or the other, each step must be accomplished.

Getting a UT Drivers License

  1. Complete a state-approved drivers education class (through a high school, commercial school, or an online provider).
  2. Pass a written license test.
  3. Pass a vision test.
  4. Complete a medical questionnaire.
  5. Get your learners permit.
  6. Pass a driving test.
  7. Get your Utah drivers license.
During this process, you must accumulate 40 hours of behind-the-wheel experience, with at least 10 of these at night. You must be 16 or older have your drivers permit for a minimum of six months before applying for your drivers license.

A parent or legal guardian must verify you completed the necessary driving time, and also assume financial responsibility for you by signing the driver license application.

Required Driver License Documents

Bring the following with you to a DPS office when applying for your license:

  • Proof of identity (birth certificate) – must be certified or original copies.
  • Proof of legal presence.
  • Two proofs of residence.
  • Proof of name change (if applicable).
  • Social Security number or ITIN.
  • Certificate of completion of drivers ed/driver training course.

Take a Permit Practice Test

Many teens prepare for the knowledge test by taking a practice test or two after studying the Utah driver license handbook. Drivers education helps, but doing this can help reinforce the information, and make it easier to remember when taking the written license test.
