Do I need auto insurance to apply for a UT drivers license? Utah

New Driver Checklist
You do not need to provide proof of auto insurance when you apply for a Utah drivers license.

As a young driver, chances are you won't have your own insurance policy. Instead, you'll probably be under the policy of a parent or legal guardian. In fact, a parent or legal guardian must sign a financial responsibility agreement when you're applying for a learners permit if you're younger than 18.

UT Car Insurance Limits

Just for reference, here are the minimum auto insurance standards for Utah:

  • $25,000 per person for bodily injury.
  • $65,000 per accident for bodily injury.
  • $15,000 per accident for property damage.
  • $3000 Personal Injury Protection (PIP).

Shopping for Car Insurance

You might be aware that car insurance rates for young drivers can be outrageously expensive. That's because young drivers – as a whole – represent a poor risk to the insurance companies due to the number of accidents (and claims) this group causes.

What can you do about this? Not much. But, comparing multiple insurance quotes helps, and allows you to save at least some money on premiums. Many sites allow you to evaluate quotes from several carriers at the same time, which simplifies and quickens the process.

But, don't allow price to be the only factor you consider. Be sure to look at matters such as coverage breadth and exclusions, customer service, claims payments, and accident forgiveness standards.
