You don't need an appointment for your Utah written license test or your vision exam.

However, if you take your driving test through a DPS location, you will usually need to make an appointment. If you take it through an approved driver ed school, it depends on the policy of the school.

Taking a Practice Test

Just because you don’t need an appointment doesn’t mean you shouldn’t treat the time you spend during your DPS visit preciously. Taking a practice test can improve your chances of passing the challenging written exam on the first attempt, as it helps prepare you for the question-and-answer format, which means you won’t have to return for a retest.

Of course, be sure to study the Utah driver license manual beforehand; you can download a copy of this on the DPS site.
