How do I apply for a VT drivers license if I am younger than 18? Vermont

New Driver Checklist

Driver License Requirements for VT Teens

As a Vermont teen, you can start driving with a learners permit at 15. A learners permit is mandatory for obtaining a junior driver license. To acquire a permit you'll need to pass a vision screening and a written test.

Prep for the Written License Test

To prepare for the test, study the state's drivers manual. Every test question is based on content in the manual, including road sign identification, drinking and driving, and space management. You can grab a manual from your local DMV office, or by downloading from the DMV website.

Next, take at least one permit practice test. These exams abound online and feature questions similar in style and content to those on the actual permit test, giving you an accurate read on whether or not you're test-ready.

When you're prepared to test, call Central Scheduling at (802) 828-2085 for an appointment.

Apply for a Drivers Permit

Arrive at the DMV with:

  • Proof of Vermont residency.
  • Proof of identity and date and place of birth.
  • A completed Application for Vermont Operator's License, Junior Operator's License or Learner Permit (Form VL021). This must be signed by a parent or guardian.
  • Proof of your Social Security number.
  • Cash or a check or money order to pay the permit and test fees.
Pass both tests – vision and written – and you'll receive a VT learners permit. You must hold the permit for one year before you can apply for a junior drivers license. During this time period you must:

  1. Complete a drivers education program. The drivers ed course must be state approved. If you present a completion certificate from a driver training course not recognized by the DMV, you'll be required to re-enroll in an approved class.
  2. Complete 40 hours of supervised driving, with 10 of the hours occurring at night. The hours must be recorded on a log sheet and signed by a parent or guardian.
  3. Maintain a spotless driving record during the six months prior to applying for a junior drivers license.
