What documents are required to obtain a Virginia drivers license? Virginia

Required Documents for a VA Drivers License

Okay, here's what you need when you apply at the DMV for a driver license:

  • Two proofs of identity.
  • Proof of your Social Security number.
  • Proof of legal presence.
  • Proof of Virginia residency.
  • Proof of drivers education, if applicable.
  • Proof of name change, if applicable.
The DMV will not accept photocopies and temporary documents. All documents must be original. The issuance of your driver license may be delayed if the DMV feels a need to verify submitted documents.

Virginia License Test Requirements

In addition to proof of identity, you'll also need to pass three tests: vision, knowledge and driving.

Knowledge Test

This test consists of two parts: road sign and general knowledge. You must answer all 10 road sign questions correctly before advancing to general knowledge, which consists of 25 questions.

Virginia's drivers manual is your number one study source for the knowledge test. All exam questions are directly based on information covered in the manual. You can download it from the DMV website, or, if you prefer studying with a hardcopy, you can grab one from any DMV office.

After studying the manual, you'll want to take at least one practice test. These online exams mirror the actual tests, allowing you to assess if you're test-ready.

Driving Test

The VA DMV usually doesn’t require appointments, but you should call your local office in advance to find out if an appointment is necessary at that particular branch.

Arrive at the license test site with:

  • A working vehicle with a valid inspection sticker.
  • A registration certificate.
  • Another licensed driver, if applicable.
If you’re older than 18, your driver license will be mailed to you by the DMV.
