Do I need auto insurance to apply for a VA drivers license? Virginia

New Driver Checklist

Auto Insurance Requirements for VA Driver License

Car insurance is mandatory in Virginia. However, you do not need to show proof when applying for a drivers license. Proof of meeting Virginia's financial responsibility requirement is only mandatory during vehicle registration.

Virginia Car Insurance Coverage

To comply with Virginia's auto insurance requirements, you must carry, at the very minimum, the following amounts of coverage:

  • $25,000 for bodily injury or death of one person.
  • $50,000 for bodily injury or death of two or more persons.
  • $20,000 for property damage.
Or, you may instead:

  • Comply with a Surety Bond. This can be executed by depositing cash or securities with the DMV.
  • Apply with the DMV for a self-insurance certificate.
  • Pay a $500 uninsured motor vehicle (UVM) fee, if your vehicle is uninsured during registration. This will allow you to legally drive your uninsured vehicle in Virginia. This does not, however, protect you with liability coverage.

Purchasing Insurance Coverage

If you opt for traditional liability protection, you must be insured with a company licensed to operate in Virginia. When shopping, take the time to compare insurance quotes with a variety of providers. The more you compare, the better your chances of finding insurance rates that meets you budget and vehicle situation.

You can compare quotes online, or request a consumer guide from the Bureau of Insurance. After narrowing your selection to a few providers, take into consideration each company's track record for policyholder service, underwriting practices, and financial stability.
