To obtain a VA drivers license, you'll need to pay, during the application process, one or all of the following license fees:

  • Learners permit/drivers license application (combined): $3
  • Drivers license (per year): $4
  • Returned check: $85
You can pay your fee with cash, check, money order, debit card or credit card (Discover, American Express, Visa, MasterCard). Make checks out to "Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles."

Other Driver License Requirements

When applying for your drivers license at DMV, you'll also be required to provide:

  • Two proofs of identity.
  • Proof of legal presence.
  • Proof of VA residency.
  • Proof of your Social Security number.
  • Proof of drivers education, if applicable.
You'll also be required to pass three tests: vision, knowledge and driving.

Get hold of the state's drivers manual to study for the two-part knowledge test. All 35 questions are directly based on content in the manual, including drinking and driving, road sign identification and turning in intersections. After studying the manual you'll also want to take at least one online practice test. These exams mirror the actual permit test in style and content, allowing you to accurately gauge strengths and weaknesses.
