Do I have to take a license test or driving test to obtain a WV drivers license? West Virginia

New Driver Checklist

West Virginia Driver License Test Requirements

Yes. Even if you’re an adult who’s getting a WV drivers license for the first time, you’ll have to take a written license test and a driving test.

Actually, the only exception is a driver who’s 18 or older and wants to transfer a valid out-of-state license. That person would, in most cases, be able to skip the written license test and driving test – though it’s always up to the examiner’s discretion.

Read on for more information about the required tests.

Vision Exam

You’ll eventually lose count of how many times you take this test. The DMV requires it for every permit and license, as well as every renewal.

Just make sure you have 20/40 vision in both eyes (with or without corrective lenses) and you’ll be fine.

Written License Test

Teens will take this test at 15 when they apply for the Level I instruction permit; adults will take it if they’re applying for the first time and obtaining their regular Class E instruction permit.

And, anyone with a license that’s been expired for more than six months will have to take it, too.

You can prepare for this test by studying the state’s driver license handbook and taking a few practice tests. The WV DMV provides a sample practice test on its website.

Most DMV locations don’t require an appointment for this test, but it’s best to call ahead for hours of operation and to find out if the location stops giving the test at a certain time of the day (most locations stop driver license testing a half hour or so before closing).

Driving Test

Teens will take this test if they’re at least 16, have held their Level I instruction permit for six months, and are applying for their Level II intermediate license; adults will take it anywhere from 30 (required) to 90 (maximum) days after receiving their regular Class E instruction permit.

As with the written exam, the driving test is required also of folks with licenses expired more than six months.

You most likely won’t need an appointment for this test, either, but call ahead for hours of operation and testing cutoff times. When you do visit the DMV for this test, be sure to bring a properly insured vehicle and a licensed driver older than 21.
