Do I have to take drivers ed or driver training to get a West Virginia driver license? West Virginia
West Virginia Driver Training Requirements
The Mountain State doesn’t require driver license applicants of any age to take a drivers education course. Drivers ed is certainly an option, and offered at most high schools, but it’s not required to get a WV drivers license. The only driver training requirements WV has are:
- A brief alcohol awareness course for new residents transferring their out-of-state licenses.
- 50 hours of supervised driving time (10 of which must take place at night) for teens getting ready to apply for the Level II intermediate license. Log your hours on the 50-Hour Certification form and have your parents or guardians sign it. Note, though, that a drivers education card can satisfy this requirement.
Prepare for Your Driver License Tests
Obviously, you’ll have to take a few tests to get your permit or drivers license – specifically, a vision exam, written license test, and driving test. You can prepare for your written license test by studying the state’s driver license handbook and taking a practice test or two. You can find practice exams online from numerous independent drivers ed companies, but know that the WV DMV website provides some sample exam questions, too.
As for the driving test, if you’re going through the state’s GDL program, you’ll either complete the 50 hours of supervised driving time or voluntarily complete a drivers education program – both of which will prepare you for the exam.
However, if you’re 18 or older and have the option of doing absolutely nothing (which isn’t advised), it’s wise to spend the 30 days you’re required to keep your regular Class E instruction permit practicing your driving with another licensed adult who’s 21 or older.
