Do I have to take a license test or driving test to obtain a WI drivers license? Wisconsin

New Driver Checklist

Required Tests for a WI Drivers License

To obtain a Wisconsin drivers license you must pass three tests: vision, knowledge, and driving.

Vision Test

You must prove you have 20/40 vision and 70-degree field of vision for an unrestricted drivers license. If your eyesight fails to meet these standards, you may be referred to an eye specialist. Or, you may be issued a restrictive license.

Knowledge Test

Study the DMV driver license handbook to prepare. Every test question is directly based on information addressed in the handbook, including road emergencies, parking, and turning in intersections. You can obtain a handbook from any DMV office, or by downloading from the DMV website.

After studying the handbook, you'll next want to take some practice tests; there are plenty online. A practice test mirrors the actual exam, allowing you to accurately decide if you're test-prepared.

No appointment is needed for the knowledge exam.

Driving Test

You must make a license test appointment with your local DMV service center. When you arrive for your scheduled test, be sure to have:

  • A vehicle in good working condition, that's legally registered and insured.
  • Another licensed driver, if applicable.
